DURATION: 5 nights / 6 days

DAY 1: NAPLES

Arrival at the Naples airport and transfer by Gran Turismo coach. Check-in, dinner and overnight stay at our hotel.

DAY 2: NAPLES CITY CENTRE AND SPACCANAPOLI (THE GREAT GOTHIC BASILICAS IN THE CAPITAL OF THE ANGEVIN KINGDOM)

Breakfast at the hotel, and then we enjoy a walking tour of the city centre. We follow via Toledo until it goes into Spaccanapoli, the famous street that divides the city into two parts, and then we reach Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. The tour continues with a visit to the Church of San Domenico Maggiore and to the religious complex of Santa Chiara, a magnificent example of the coexistence of different styles and cultures, typical of Naples. Walking along Via Benedetto Croce, we bump into Piazzetta Nilo with its Statue of the Nile God, also known as “Corpo di Napoli” (the “Body of Naples”) because it is said to be located in the very centre of the city. Then we take Via San Gregorio Armeno, the picturesque street lined with artisanal shops selling nativity sets and figures, until we reach the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore and Via Duomo, with its majestic Cathedral and baptistery, the Palaeo-christian Basilica and the Chapel housing the relics of St Januarius. Lunch at your leisure. The itinerary takes us to Maschio Angioino (the “Angevin Keep”) and to the Teatro Reale di San Carlo, the oldest and one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe. Right across the road is the Galleria Umberto I, an elegant shopping gallery built at the end of the 19th century. Finally, we reach Piazza del Plebiscito, bounded by the 17th-century Royal Palace that belonged to the Bourbons. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 3: ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR OF POMPEII - NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM OF PIETRARSA

After breakfast, we head out to visit the great excavations of Pompeii, the ancient city buried by ash and lapilli after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The excavated city offers a unique snapshot of Roman life, providing a fascinating insight into the customs, eating habits and everyday life of people over two millennia ago. Pompeii was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. After lunch (at your leisure), we head for the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa, which is one of Italy’s most important industrial archaeology centres serving as a hub of railway culture. Return to the hotel, with dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: PANORAMIC TOUR OF ISCHIA - ARAGONESE CASTLE - MUNICIPALITIES OF THE ISLAND

Breakfast and transfer by boat to Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, which features one of the few active volcanoes in Italy, Mount Epomeo. A coach will take us around the island. Today the island is renowned for its thermal baths and the magnificent Aragonese Castle, which was built on an islet in the middle of the sea. The tour also includes some towns including Casamicciola, famous for its hot springs, and Lacco Ameno, known for its thermal baths and the Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae, which houses many important archaeological finds. Lunch at your leisure, then return to the hotel, with dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 5: AMALFI COAST (POSITANO - AMALFI)

After breakfast we head for Salerno then sail to Positano, which has been a popular holiday destination since Roman times. The town is built on different levels, so be ready to go up and down hundreds of stairs. Of particular interest are the church of Santa Maria Assunta and the lovely city centre, full of small shops and renowned fashion boutiques. Lunch at your leisure. Then we head for Amalfi, the town that gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies, set between the sea and the mountains. This town boasts a glorious history, as it was the most important maritime republic. The stunning Amalfi Cathedral is definitely worth a visit, with its steep staircase, gold-decorated facade and bronze door, not to mention the Cloister of Paradise inside. Return to Salerno by boat. Return to the hotel, with dinner and overnight stay.
